TRADING ADDICTION TREATMENT IN LOUISIANA
Louisiana may seem a world away from the fast-moving financial markets of New York and Chicago, but the Pelican State has historically flown close to organized trading in the United States. New Orleans was a major commercial and financial center long before modern electronic markets emerged: the New Orleans Cotton Exchange was established in 1871, at a time when roughly one-third of U.S. cotton production passed through the city, and it developed into an important spot and futures market. New Orleans also had its own stock exchange, where stock trading was active by the 1880s before the exchange eventually merged with Chicago’s Midwest Stock Exchange in 1959. More recently, Louisiana has moved into newer forms of financial technology. The state enacted its Virtual Currency Businesses Act in 2020, establishing a licensing framework for companies conducting virtual-currency business, while subsequent legislation has addressed cryptocurrency, digital assets, blockchain activity and even home digital-asset mining.
Louisiana’s financial and wagering landscape has expanded further through sports betting. Voters in 55 of the state’s 64 parishes approved sports wagering in November 2020, legislation establishing the regulatory framework followed in 2021, retail sportsbooks began opening in October/November 2021, and online and mobile wagering launched in January 2022. The market has since grown substantially, with Louisiana sportsbooks recording more than $4.1 billion in combined wagering handle during 2025. Now, the arrival of online prediction markets and event contracts is adding another layer, allowing participants to take positions on outcomes—including sporting events—through financial-style contracts that can resemble trading more than conventional sportsbook wagering. Louisiana’s Gaming Control Board formally issued an advisory about prediction markets and event-based contracts in December 2025, underscoring how quickly this new category has entered the state’s gaming and financial conversation. Most Louisiana residents can participate in these activities without developing a serious problem, but the state’s own responsible-gambling information cites a 2016 prevalence study finding that 5.4% of adults had the potential for problem gambling disorder and another 2.9% met criteria for pathological gambling disorder. The overlap between repeated wagering, financial losses, chasing losses, risk-taking and persistent market activity creates an important area of concern as trading addiction in Louisiana becomes increasingly relevant—particularly in a state where access to mental-health care remains limited. As of 2025, only two of Louisiana’s 64 parishes were reported as not having severe mental-health professional shortages.
